Montgomery Elementary currently serves as the second grade campus for Henderson ISD and was a recognized campus for the 2005-2006 school year.
The land on which Montgomery Elementary School now stands was purchased from the Montgomery family in 1937 for $1,000. The school building was built by Fred Hale. At that time, the school had seven regular classrooms, one small classroom, a sickroom, a rest area for teachers, an office, and a cafeteria. Montgomery began as a first through fifth grade school. A master teacher handled the part of a principal during the first years of the school. Mrs. Josie Wright was the first principal of Montgomery and served from 1948 –1965. The school had about 125 students when it first opened. Mrs. Wright had a special fifth grade tea party every year before school was out.
Many additions have been made over the years, including the addition of a first grade wing in 1957 and a fourth grade wing and auditorium in 1960. In 1970 and 1971, the campus expanded further with the addition of four portable buildings and a special programs building, and in 1984, a gymnasium was added.
Since Mrs. Wright, all of Montgomery’s principals have been men and have included James Mason (1965-1968), Albert Smith (1968-1994), Henry Pace (1994-1997), Al Gilson (1997-1998), Craig Hurt (1998- Oct 2008). Sara Hood; interim principal
