Gena Smith Gardiner, HHS Class of 1973, has been named as a 2025 Distinguished Alumnae by the HISD Alumni Association. Daughter of long-time HHS principal Gene Smith and the late Barbara Smith, Gena dedicated 40+ years of her life as an educator and served in many roles while positively impacting students across several districts. Gena began her public school career in Henderson ISD as a teacher, principal, and Director of Elementary Curriculum and Instruction, as well as Executive Director of the newly formed HISD Education Foundation. Her administrative path then led her to Weatherford ISD and finally to Highland Park ISD, where Gena served as Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction, and Special Programs. After retiring in 2017, she has continued to give back as an educational consultant and through a variety of community organizations.
