Smith

Henderson ISD is mourning the loss of longtime educator and former Henderson High School principal A. Gene Smith, who recently passed away at the age of 98.

Mr. Smith dedicated many years to the students, staff, and families of the Henderson ISD community. His leadership at Henderson High School helped shape generations of Lions and left a lasting impact on the campus. His connection to the district also extended to his family with his daughter, Gena Gardiner, later serving the district as a Henderson ISD principal and district administrator.

"I’ve heard from many in the community who knew Gene as both a teacher and principal," Superintendent Brian Bowman said. "He was known for the expectations he set for students and teachers and for the lasting influence he had on Henderson High School. His legacy clearly reflects the Tradition of Excellence that defines our district."

Those who worked with Smith often recall the discipline and professionalism he brought to his staff. Stacey Johnson, Executive Director of the HISD Education Foundation and former assistant superintendent, said Smith’s leadership left a lasting impression on those he mentored.

"Needless to say, I always did what he expected, and he expected high standards from his teachers," Johnson said. "Dress appropriately, be prepared, teach every single day, don’t miss a day, and follow the rules."

Many former staff members also remember the brief handwritten notes Smith would place in teachers’ mailboxes.

"Most of his staff will remember his infamous ‘See me - AGS’ notes, in his beautiful handwriting, that we often found in our teacher boxes," Johnson said. "And even after he retired, he was still an HHS Lion through and through and an encourager for the rest of his life."

A celebration of Smith’s life will be held at 4:00 p.m. Thursday, March 26, at First Baptist Church in Henderson. The family will receive friends at a reception in the mall area of the church immediately following the service.
