This afternoon at Northside Intermediate School, an adult visitor attending a classroom party suffered a medical emergency. The Northside campus was placed on a brief “hold” while the campus nurse and other staff assisted the visitor. Paramedics were called to the scene and the person was transported to a local hospital for further treatment. Since this resulted in a minor disruption to the instructional day, we wanted to notify all parents about the incident. We wish the person a speedy recovery.

This morning we planned a much-anticipated event that kids look forward to every year; handing out the 2021-2022 HHS Yearbook. As a parent, alumni and, most importantly, as the HHS Principal, I was greatly disappointed. The 2021-2022 High School Yearbook does not meet our tradition of excellence. A yearbook should give you the opportunity to look back and remember the best of times. It should celebrate all of our student organizations, their activities, and their successes. It should recall the people, the places and the events that made that year memorable. The 2021-2022 Yearbook does not. I trust that our students last year put in a tremendous amount of work gathering information, writing captions and articles and building pages. However, not all of their work made it to the printed product. I am committed to making this right for the Class of 2022 and other HHS students. If you have paid for a 2021-2022 Yearbook, we will deliver a product worthy of your expectations as quickly as possible. We have spoken with the company that prints our yearbook to begin the process of printing a new, complete book. It will include all of our students, our student organizations, and the memories you have come to expect. In short, with a little patience and maybe even some of your help along the way, we will create a Henderson High School Yearbook for 2022 we can all be proud of. Shannon Dickerson, HHS Principal

Statement concerning medical incident at the High School this morning (December 15, 2022) Around 7:45 a.m. this morning a high school staff member had a medical issue while assisting students in the indoor athletic facility. The district’s athletic trainers were nearby and immediately responded to provide first aid. An ambulance was called to the scene and paramedics treated the staff member at the scene. Out of an abundance of caution, the employee was transported to the hospital for further observation. The staffer is improving and we wish the staff member a speedy recovery.

All campuses are currently following their normal schedules at this time. While students on all campuses did shelter in place earlier during the tornado warning for the city of Henderson, students returned to their classes once the danger passed. We are continuing to watch weather conditions closely and will update if necessary.

Keeping students safe is one of HISD’s primary goals and we often teach and practice how to respond in situations that could be dangerous. In fact, the Texas Education Code (TEC) requires districts such as HISD to train in a variety of areas on a regular basis. In accordance with TEC, Sec. 38.030, we will offer instruction each year on how to use a bleeding control station so students will know how to use it if it is ever needed. As required by law, the training is led by a school resource officer or staff member. The training is offered to students enrolled at the campus in grades seven or higher. The training is not mandatory; it is voluntary. Students will have the opportunity to sign up for the training later this week. A parent permission form will be sent home December 5th for those students who signed up for the training. Only students who return the signed parent permission form in the affirmative will be allowed to participate in the training after Christmas Break. Please contact Stephanie Gatlin, HISD Health & Wellness Coordinator, at 903-655-5037 if you have any questions.

This afternoon, a student on board an HISD school bus had a sudden medical issue. The driver immediately stopped the bus, called for assistance and rendered first aid to the student.
