Benadryl Availability for Allergic Reactions
Dear HISD Families,
At HISD, student safety is our top priority. We want to inform you that Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is available in the nurse's office for emergency situations in the event a student experiences an allergic reaction, even if there was no prior knowledge of an allergy. Allergic reactions may be caused by wasp stings, insect bites, food, contact allergens, etc. If your child has a known allergy, please ensure that the school is aware, and that any necessary medical information is provided to the nurse.
We have a standing order from a physician to administer Benadryl when necessary to help slow or stop the reaction process while waiting for you to pick up your child.
If you give permission for your child(ren) to receive Benadryl in the event of an allergic reaction, please follow the link below to complete the Google Form:
https://forms.gle/Srq55t6rCjZfmUXD8
Please note that starting next school year, you will also have the option to grant permission for Benadryl as part of the First Aid form during registration in Skyward.
Thank you for your attention to this important matter. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to your child’s campus nurse or Stephanie Gatlin, HISD Health and Wellness Coordinator, at 903-655-5037.

Keeping students safe is one of HISD’s primary goals and we often teach and practice how to respond in situations that could be dangerous. In fact, the Texas Education Code (TEC) requires districts such as HISD to train in a variety of areas on a regular basis.
In accordance with TEC, Sec. 38.030, we will offer instruction each year on how to use a bleeding control station so students will know how to use it if it is ever needed. The training is offered in two parts to students enrolled at the campus in grades seven or higher. The first part is an online training and the second part is an in-person skills training. Stop the Bleed training for students is not mandatory; it is voluntary.
If you would like your student to participate in Stop the Bleed training, please follow the instructions below:
• Go to the HISD website at www.hendersonisd.org
• Click on Menu
• Under Departments click on “Health Services”
• Scroll to the bottom of the “HISD Health and Wellness” page and click on “Optional Stop the Bleed Training for Students”. The letter will give you instructions on how to complete the online training and in-person skills training.
Please contact Stephanie Gatlin, HISD Health & Wellness Coordinator, at 903-655-5037 if you have any questions.

On Friday, Henderson ISD was informed of a confirmed case of bacterial meningitis in a high school student. We immediately passed this information on to you for the safety of your students and our staff, as required by state guidelines. Although the student is still recovering, further investigation by state health authorities and additional lab results, just made available today, show that the student was not infected with bacterial meningitis.
While this is great news, we continue to emphasize the importance of practicing good hygiene to prevent the spread of any illnesses.
Continued Precautions:
- Please remind your children to:
- Wash their hands frequently.
- Avoid sharing drinks, food, or personal items such as water bottles.
- Cover their mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
We remain committed to keeping our school community safe and healthy and thank you for your cooperation and understanding. Our thoughts remain with the student and wish the student a speedy recovery.

ATTENTION PARENTS:
If you would like to get involved with HISD’s School Health Advisory Council, please scan the QR code.
Texas Education Code 28.004 requires school districts to establish a School Health Advisory Council (SHAC). SHAC responsibilities include, but are not limited to, making recommendations to the school board concerning health program planning and health promotion.
The majority of the SHAC members must be parents not employed with HISD and have students enrolled in the district.
The SHAC meeting dates and times for the 24-25 school year are listed below. If you would like to attend a meeting to see firsthand what SHAC is all about, please feel free to attend.
All meetings are held in the HISD Board Room at 300 Crosby Drive:
November 19th at Noon
January 21st at 5:30 p.m.
March 18th at Noon
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Stephanie Gatlin, HISD Health and Wellness Coordinator, at 903-655-5037.

*** Confirmed case of bacterial meningitis confirmed in HHS student***
We have been notified that a Henderson High School student has a confirmed case of bacterial meningitis. Out of an abundance of caution, we are notifying all of our families in the district. We ask you to join us in being proactive to ensure the health and safety of all our students.
*** What You Should Know About Bacterial Meningitis:***
Bacterial meningitis is a serious infection that affects the brain and spinal cord. It typically spreads through close contact, such as coughing, sneezing, or sharing drinks or personal items and not through casual contact. The early symptoms can include:
Severe headache
High fever
Stiff neck
Nausea and vomiting
Sensitivity to light
Confusion or difficulty concentrating
Most students should receive a vaccination for bacterial meningitis around the age of 11, which can provide some protection against this illness. However, it’s still important to be aware of the symptoms and seek medical attention if your child shows any signs of illness.
***What To Do:***
If your high school child shows any of the symptoms mentioned above, please seek medical attention immediately. Early diagnosis and treatment are critical. Bacterial meningitis can be life-threatening, but with prompt care, it is treatable.
Please remind your children to practice good hygiene, such as frequent handwashing and not sharing personal items like water bottles, especially after athletic activities. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your primary care physician.
***Steps we have taken:***
We have already notified the local health authorities and are following their recommendations, which include enhanced cleaning protocols in areas such as locker rooms, athletic facilities and other common areas. We are also closely monitoring students and staff for any signs of illness and will update you with additional information when it becomes available. Our thoughts remain with the student and wish the student a speedy recovery.
