Wylie Primary and Wylie Elementary are currently experiencing a power outage. All students are safe. We are in contact with utility crews, who have confirmed that the issue is affecting a larger area on the east side of Henderson. We will provide updates as more information becomes available. Medical Emergency on HISD Bus This afternoon, near the end of a bus route, one of our bus monitors experienced a minor medical emergency. The bus driver immediately stopped the bus and contacted emergency services. Paramedics responded to the scene, and the employee received medical attention. Due to the situation, the bus was unable to complete its route and the remaining student was safely transported home by district staff. Our thoughts are with our employee, and we wish them a swift recovery. We appreciate the quick response of our staff and first responders in ensuring the safety of everyone involved.

A Kilgore High School student was detained last night at Henderson High School following a basketball game. During the game, school staff and police officers learned a student may have been in possession of a weapon while on a Kilgore ISD bus. While searching the school bus, staff found a weapon. Officers believe the student left the weapon on the bus before entering the school. The Henderson Police Department, along with the cooperation of both Henderson ISD and Kilgore ISD, is continuing the investigation. The safety and security of our students and staff both during the school day and at all school related events remains our top priority and we appreciate all those who provided information during this incident.

During Holocaust Remembrance Week, our honors history students were profoundly impacted by a deeply moving presentation on the Holocaust by Dr. Kevin Simpson, Department Chair and Distinguished Professor of Psychology at John Brown University. Dr. Simpson's extensive research and experiences, including his time as a Fulbright Scholar in the Slovak Republic and his fellowship at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, brought unparalleled depth to the discussion. In addition to engaging with our students, Dr. Simpson also had the opportunity to meet with our social studies teachers during their planning meeting, sharing insights and fostering meaningful conversations about teaching this critical subject. We are sincerely grateful for the opportunity to learn from Dr. Simpson and for the lasting impact he has made on both our students and staff.

From Interim Superintendent Jim Dunlap - A great big shout out of appreciation to these guys for their exceptional dedication, time and extra efforts in monitoring weather forecasts, traveling roads, and ensuring our buildings were ready for instruction during recent weather events. Their extraordinary loyalty to HISD began as early as 12:01 AM on the past two weather events and continued through the dark, cold morning hours on lonely back roads. The information they gathered was crucial in making informed decisions about whether to close school, delay school, or continue as usual. Their work begins as part of this great HISD team while most everyone else is tucked into their warm beds. And like all heroes, “someone has to do it” and what they do is critical to keeping students, staff, and families safe. We owe them a huge thank you. So, when you see them, let them know how much you appreciate their part in keeping the “Tradition of Excellence” in Henderson ISD. (Photo: Gary Don Davis, Kyle Gatlin, Terry Everitt, David Chenault)

Delayed Start Announcement for Today Henderson ISD will have a delayed start today, with classes beginning at 10:00 a.m. Buses will run two hours later than their regular schedule. While most roads in the district are in good condition, there are icy spots in the southernmost areas, especially on elevated surfaces, which could be hazardous this morning. This delayed start will allow extra time for students and staff traveling in the affected areas. We will continue to monitor the roads in hopes of conditions improving through the morning. Thank you for your understanding, and please exercise caution on the roads. Stay safe and warm!

Dear HISD Families, Sick season is officially here, and we need your help to keep our students and staff as healthy as possible. The flu and other illnesses are circulating, and we ask if your child is sick, please keep them at home until they are 24 hours fever-free, vomit-free, or diarrhea-free. It is important that students do not attend school while sick, even if they have been given medication like Tylenol, Advil, Imodium, etc. Sending a sick child to school can contribute to the spread of illness. Thank you for your support in keeping HISD healthy!

We are monitoring the forecast for potential wintry weather over the next couple of days. Our commitment to the safety of our students, staff, and families is at the forefront of every decision we make. If conditions warrant, we will announce any changes to the school schedule, such as closures or delays, by 5:00 a.m. each morning. This timeline helps ensure families and staff can plan accordingly. When making these decisions, we consider several factors, including road conditions in Henderson as well as the nearly 1,000 miles of county roads our buses travel each day. Even if the roads in town are clear, some of our bridges and less traveled county roads could be icy, blocked by downed trees or otherwise unsafe for travel. To make informed decisions, we work closely with local law enforcement, road crews, and the National Weather Service to assess current and forecasted conditions. We will communicate updates through our usual channels, including Facebook, email, text, the HISD website, and other social media. Please ensure your contact information is up-to-date in Skyward to receive timely notifications. Thank you for your understanding and support as we prioritize the safety and well-being of our school community.
