Preparing the mind for excellence! 🎯 Todd Nesloney knocked it out of the park speaking to our Elementary and Intermediate teachers this morning, challenging them to be unconventional when striving for excellence in the classroom! 🏆 And a BIG thanks to Calvary Baptist for allowing us to use their building for the event.

Thank you to Texas Bank for their commitment to HISD students and for helping feed our teachers and staff on Convocation morning! #TexasBank
It's hard to learn on an empty stomach, which is why our Child Nutrition staff--who are training today for excellence--are often unsung heroes. Thank you to those who are committed to feeding students and improving our children's chances of success!

At HISD, ‘Excellence’ is our aim. It is more than a motto to us. This is a traditional, continuous standard that we always strive for. Our students and staff will have the best possible environment conducive to learning and finding their own personal excellence every day.
Your Board of Trustees is in active discussion of several areas that need immediate attention within the district. This includes the overall appearance and physical condition of our campuses. We are working persistently to address each one of your suggestions in a timely and efficient manner. The first day that he was in the District, Mr. Dunlap asked each Board member to contact him, day or night, with any question or concern. This standard of open and collaborative communication has facilitated an effective working relationship which encourages every Board member and HISD employee to pass along community questions to him. He straightaway addressed them with staff. All District employees are currently hard at work to prepare for the first day of classes and welcome our students back to campus next Wednesday. They will find our campuses clean, secure and, and inviting for both new and returning students and their families.
Your thoughts and suggestions are appreciated and always welcome. Thank you for helping us renew the ‘Tradition of Excellence!” at Henderson Independent School District.
Important Update on Self-Carry Medication Forms
Dear HISD Families,
In light of the recent changes to our medication practices that were previously posted, we want to clarify the guidelines regarding the self-carry medication forms signed by a physician which are used by students who have a life-threatening condition. For the safety of our students, please note that these forms are only applicable for life-saving medications such as diabetes medications, epi pens, inhalers, etc. They do not cover over-the-counter medications like Tylenol, Advil, or Tums. This has been our established practice, and we will continue to adhere to it.
Additionally, please be aware that the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) will be providing new information in the coming weeks about school nurses administering medications. This may lead to changes in our current practices. We apologize for any confusion or inconvenience this may cause.
For any questions or concerns, please reach out to Stephanie Gatlin, HISD Health and Wellness Coordinator, at 903-655-5037.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

CHANGES IN ADMINISTERING PRESCRIPTION AND OVER-THE-COUNTER MEDICATIONS AT SCHOOL
Dear HISD Families,
We want to inform you about an important change in the way medications are administered at school, effective immediately.
In accordance with recent state-level changes, the following new requirement is now in place for administering both prescription and over-the-counter medications at school:
In addition to parents/guardians providing the medication and completing the medication administration form (available from your school nurse), a written physician’s order will now be required for students to receive medication at school.
This includes prescription medications like ADHD medication, seizure medication, inhalers, topical medications, etc. This also includes over-the -counter medications like Tylenol, Advil, Tums, etc.
Here’s what the physician’s order must include:
• Student’s name
• Date of Birth (DOB)
• Name of medication
• Dose of medication
• Route of administration
• Frequency of administration
PLEASE REMEMBER STUDENTS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO HAVE MEDICATION IN THEIR POSSESSION UNLESS THEY HAVE A SELF-CARRY FORM SIGNED BY THEIR PHYSICIAN. A self-carry form is available from your student’s school nurse.
Please make sure the order is submitted to your student’s school nurse along with the medication and completed medication administration form. This is our current practice, but it is subject to change. Thank you for your cooperation during this transition. If you have any questions, please contact Stephanie Gatlin, HISD Health and Wellness Coordinator at 903-655-5037.

As a part of our constant focus on student safety, we want to thank Meteorologist Doc Deason for stopping by our HISD Safety & Security Symposium today and talking with district staff about weather threats in a school setting!

Happy 4th of July from the HISD family!

District mourns the loss of elementary school student
It is with profound sadness that our staff and students mourn the recent passing of Stevee Hale. Stevee, who would have been a first grader next year, was an exceptional student and our hearts and deepest sympathies go out to her family during this incredibly difficult time.
During a recent school board meeting, Board President Russell Brown, who knew Stevee personally, led trustees in a moment of silence to honor and remember her. In a statement read by Brown, one of her teachers described Stevee as “the perfect mixture of wild and sweet. You knew she was in the room, and you truly never wanted her to leave. To know her was to completely adore her, and she left this world with a little more sparkle than it had before she got here.”
Her principal, Leslie Bowles, added, “She always had a smile on her face and gave the best hugs on her way to class every morning. She was truly a ray of sunshine to all of those she was around.”
We encourage our entire community to join us in keeping her family in your thoughts and prayers. Stevee’s loss is deeply felt by all who knew her, and while we know her friends, classmates, and teachers will continue to struggle with her loss, her memory will forever remain in our hearts.

The 2024 Graduation will proceed even if it rains. Please be prepared for wet weather. We may delay the start by one or two hours if necessary to avoid severe weather or lightning. Only as a last resort will we postpone the event entirely. Please check HendersonISD.org/graduation for updated information.

Dear HISD Families,
This morning, a Henderson Middle School student required medical attention. The school nurse provided immediate first aid while Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel responded to the school. The student was transported by ambulance to the hospital for further evaluation and care. Our thoughts are with the student and their family and we wish the student a speedy recovery.
