A medical incident occurred this afternoon at our Primary campus. A staff member experienced a minor medical issue, and our campus nurse promptly responded. Out of an abundance of caution, paramedics were called to assist, but transportation to the hospital was not necessary. This incident did not disrupt any student activities, and everyone is safe. We appreciate the swift and professional response from our nurse and the paramedics. - HISD Administration

From Interim Superintendent Jim Dunlap: "Over the past few days, Clay Freeman and I have visited at length about our mutual desire to improve several areas at HISD that require strong leadership in our district operations. Mr. Freeman is HISD Athletic Director. That has not changed. Clay has agreed to assist HISD in two critical areas in support of the instructional program: maintenance and transportation. He has experience as a campus leader and a keen awareness of public expectations. We agree that his arrangement will not distract or interfere with his Athletic Director duties. He is the right person to do this as we continue the Tradition of Excellence that is HISD."

Dear HMS Families, This morning, a fire alarm was triggered at our middle school after smoke was observed coming from the ductwork in a classroom. Out of an abundance of caution, we evacuated all students from the building and called the fire department to investigate. Crews clearing the scene at this time after determining the exact cause of the smoke in an AC unit. We want to assure you that all students are safe, and we will resume classes shortly. - HISD Admin

At HISD, ‘Excellence’ is our aim. It is more than a motto to us. This is a traditional, continuous standard that we always strive for. Our students and staff will have the best possible environment conducive to learning and finding their own personal excellence every day. Your Board of Trustees is in active discussion of several areas that need immediate attention within the district. This includes the overall appearance and physical condition of our campuses. We are working persistently to address each one of your suggestions in a timely and efficient manner. The first day that he was in the District, Mr. Dunlap asked each Board member to contact him, day or night, with any question or concern. This standard of open and collaborative communication has facilitated an effective working relationship which encourages every Board member and HISD employee to pass along community questions to him. He straightaway addressed them with staff. All District employees are currently hard at work to prepare for the first day of classes and welcome our students back to campus next Wednesday. They will find our campuses clean, secure and, and inviting for both new and returning students and their families. Your thoughts and suggestions are appreciated and always welcome. Thank you for helping us renew the ‘Tradition of Excellence!” at Henderson Independent School District.

Important Update on Self-Carry Medication Forms Dear HISD Families, In light of the recent changes to our medication practices that were previously posted, we want to clarify the guidelines regarding the self-carry medication forms signed by a physician which are used by students who have a life-threatening condition. For the safety of our students, please note that these forms are only applicable for life-saving medications such as diabetes medications, epi pens, inhalers, etc. They do not cover over-the-counter medications like Tylenol, Advil, or Tums. This has been our established practice, and we will continue to adhere to it. Additionally, please be aware that the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) will be providing new information in the coming weeks about school nurses administering medications. This may lead to changes in our current practices. We apologize for any confusion or inconvenience this may cause. For any questions or concerns, please reach out to Stephanie Gatlin, HISD Health and Wellness Coordinator, at 903-655-5037. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

CHANGES IN ADMINISTERING PRESCRIPTION AND OVER-THE-COUNTER MEDICATIONS AT SCHOOL Dear HISD Families, We want to inform you about an important change in the way medications are administered at school, effective immediately. In accordance with recent state-level changes, the following new requirement is now in place for administering both prescription and over-the-counter medications at school: In addition to parents/guardians providing the medication and completing the medication administration form (available from your school nurse), a written physician’s order will now be required for students to receive medication at school. This includes prescription medications like ADHD medication, seizure medication, inhalers, topical medications, etc. This also includes over-the -counter medications like Tylenol, Advil, Tums, etc. Here’s what the physician’s order must include: • Student’s name • Date of Birth (DOB) • Name of medication • Dose of medication • Route of administration • Frequency of administration PLEASE REMEMBER STUDENTS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO HAVE MEDICATION IN THEIR POSSESSION UNLESS THEY HAVE A SELF-CARRY FORM SIGNED BY THEIR PHYSICIAN. A self-carry form is available from your student’s school nurse. Please make sure the order is submitted to your student’s school nurse along with the medication and completed medication administration form. This is our current practice, but it is subject to change. Thank you for your cooperation during this transition. If you have any questions, please contact Stephanie Gatlin, HISD Health and Wellness Coordinator at 903-655-5037.
